A certain trend may be in fashion for sometime and then is out but it may again appear over the horizons of fashion over a short or long period of time; i.e. a retro.
Fashion icons at a specific time play an important role in popularity of a certain clothing style. People take them as their opinion leaders and try to imitate them. Media has a strong say in this regards. It may promote a certain clothing style and habit through magazines, TV channels etc.
Marketing has also played an important role in making people conscious about their outlook and clothing style. Moving from mass customization to an era of personalization, societies has devised and adopted such new trends in clothing that one wonders if nature herself has landed in one’s wardrobe.

Though thought to be the original creations of the designers, designers clothing is basically a sort of license that gives a specific company the right to use the name of that designer.
